Silk Care
Guide to Washing and Caring for Your Silk Garments
Silk is a natural product that, like wool, "self-cleans" when exposed to fresh air. Therefore, it's usually not necessary to wash silk very often.
About Washing Silk All the silk we produce can withstand washing at temperatures up to 40 degrees Celsius.
For Hand Washing:
- Use a clean basin or bowl with a small spoonful of detergent without enzymes (wool/silk detergent or hair shampoo).
- DO NOT soak the silk, but wash gently for 2 minutes.
- Wring and then rinse 2-3 times in clean, cold water.
- Wring again (you may wrap it in a towel) and hang to dry on a hanger or spread out on a drying rack.
For Machine Washing:
- Preferably choose the machine's quick program (10-15 minutes is sufficient) and use only a small amount of detergent (wool/silk detergent or hair shampoo).
- Select a temperature of 30-40 degrees Celsius and a spin cycle of no more than 800 revolutions per minute.
- Hang to dry on a hanger or spread out on a drying rack.
Ironing/steaming can be done at quite a high temperature. We personally use a "cotton" setting on the iron for everything in the store, and over the past 40 years, we have not burned or damaged a single piece of silk.
